When is the best time to visit Cappadocia?

Cappadocia is one of the most beautiful places in Turkey with its unique nature and several tourist attractions. As well as its natural beauties, Cappadocia is also a historical place and it offers you several activities. The best time to visit Cappadocia depends on the reason for your visit.

However, we can say that the best time to visit Cappadocia is between April and September/October. Because the weather is warm in that season, you would be able to walk in the historic region comfortably. However, if you could not visit Cappadocia between these months, do not worry. It’s always possible to be involved in activities in Cappadocia.

Best Time For Hot Air Balloon Rides

Perhaps, hot air balloons are the first thing that comes to mind when we hear the name of Cappadocia. Hot air ballooning allows you to see the incredible landscape of Cappadocia. Hot air balloon rides in Cappadocia offer you one of the most unforgettable experiences in your life. You can see the unique fairy chimneys of Cappadocia from the air. Watch the amazing landscape of Cappadocia or try to reach the clouds if you can… It is an experience you never forget for the rest of your life. The sky filled with air balloons is also a great view.

Although the flying season is active during the whole year, the best time for hot air balloon rides is between April and November. The weather is very important in air balloon rides, and the best conditions of the climate are during these months. The wind is the most important factor for balloon riding. The weather could be windy but not too much. When the wind is too strong, it would be impossible to take off for hot air balloons. Between April and November, the wind is perfect and you can float freely.

In winter, cancellations of hot air balloon rides are common because the weather could be windy frequently. However, if you have the chance to attend a hot air balloon ride, it would be an incredible experience. In winter, the air would be clearer and you can see further points. Moreover, the winter landscape is breath-taking if there is snow on the ground. So, if you think that you could tolerate the cold weather, you could also experience this.

Best Time For Hiking

As well as looking at the amazing view of Cappadocia from the air, walking this landscape would be another unforgettable experience. Cappadocia is one of the perfect places for hiking with its spectacular nature and historical atmosphere. The best time for hiking in the Cappadocia is the spring and autumn months, i.e. The weather would not be too hot or too cold. Therefore, you can walk in the beautiful valleys of Cappadocia without sweating or feeling cold. Because Cappadocia is located in central Turkey, Summers are generally very hot and dry. The temperature could be above 105 F (40 C). Thus, hiking could be a very tough experience. Similarly, winters are also tough in Cappadocia. Although there could be an amazing view in the winter months, hiking would not be a good choice in winter. The weather is generally very cold and windy. So, March to June and September to December would be the perfect seasons for hiking in Cappadocia.

The best hiking routes could be listed as follows;

White Valley

White Valley is the best place in Cappadocia where you can see the tallest fairy chimneys of Cappadocia. A standard hiking activity takes about 1,5 hour in White Valley. 

Love Valley

The route starts from the Uçhisar Castle. The length of the route is about 3.1 miles( 5 km).  You can see some landforms that you would not be able to see in any other place in the world. 

Pigeon Valley

The name of the valley comes from the pigeons living in the valley for ages. The approximate duration of hiking in the valley is about 45 minutes.  You can see the tree with amulets on it. People believe that putting amulets on that tree brings good luck.  Mornings would be the best time for a walk in this valley.

Sword Valley

This valley starts from the Göreme Open Air Museum and ends in Çavuşin village.  If you are a novice in hiking, this route would be the best choice for you.  It is very easy to find direction without any mapping.

Other routes for hiking in Cappadocia are Red Valley, Rose Valley,  Meskendir Valley and Ihlara Valley. 

Best Time For Museums and Other Attractions

As we said at the beginning of the article, Cappadocia is not only famous for its natural beauties but also for its historical atmosphere. There are several museums in Cappadocia. If you like to visit cultural heritages in different places of the world, you must see museums in Cappadocia. For hot air balloon rides and for hiking, the season has crucial importance. However, it is not the same for museums. You can visit museums every season. Nevertheless, we need to state that, if you want to visit open-air museums like Göreme, as we said in hiking, we recommend autumn and spring instead of hot days of summer and cold days of winter. Do not forget that, especially in the Göreme Open Air Museum, you will need to climb upstairs or go up the hills.

Weather of Cappadocia

The weather of Cappadocia is not constant throughout the year like most cities of Turkey. Characteristics of all seasons could be seen in different months of a year. Because the region is in central Turkey, Cappadocia has continental climate. Therefore, summers are generally hot and dry, and winters are cold, sometimes snowy.

Spring

Spring is the best season to visit Cappadocia for hiking. However, if the main reason to visit Cappadocia is air balloons for you, it would be good to know that hot air balloon cancellations are not rare in April due to windy weather. On the other hand, in May the power of wind decreases, and rains stop. Therefore, hot air balloon rides are possible. The average temperature is around 68 F(20 C) in most of Spring. 

Summer

Summers of Cappadocia could be really hot especially in late July and August. Therefore, summers would not be a good choice for hiking and walking activities. Museum tours and other cultural activities might be the best choices for activities in Cappadocia. However, if you think that hot weather is not a big problem for you, you can do outside activities in Cappadocia as well. The landscape of Cappadocia would be beautiful in the Summer.

Autumn

If you like mild weather rather and too hot and too cold, Cappadocia in autumn would make you more than happy. Autumn days in Cappadocia are cool. Hiking, hot air balloon riding, and cultural activities are all possible in autumn. 

Winter

Winters are cold, sometimes really cold in Cappadocia. Some days could be really snowy and stormy. Therefore, especially hot air balloon ridings are not common in Winter compared to other seasons. However, the landscape would be amazing if you have the opportunity. At night, you may see freezing temperatures. Nature is really amazing in winters, so it is understandable to visit Cappadocia in winters. However, be prepared against very cold weather.

Peak Season 

The peak season for Cappadocia is July and August like many other touristic places in Turkey. Nevertheless, these months are not the best months to visit the region because of the very hot weather. Moreover, prices are high and it is not easy to book a place to stay because of high demand. Instead, we recommend the late spring and autumn seasons to visit the Cappadocia.

Off-Season

The off-season for Cappadocia is winter. In the winter months, demand for hotels is low and prices are highly reduced. However, still, you will see lots of travelers around.
