How do you get to Bodrum?

Orak Island, Bodrum, Turkey

Bodrum is a port city and a common vacation choice by travelers both in Turkey and around the world. The city offers many ways to spend your vacation. There are numerous beaches and resorts throughout the city as well as places for kids, water sport enthusiasts, families, and so on.

Its pleasant weather complements the bays and beaches scattered around the city. There is a right place both for people looking for a fun, activity-filled trip, and people who just want to relax and enjoy the sights.

In this guide, I will be investigating various transportation options for getting to Bodrum, whether it be from another Turkish city or all the way abroad. This in-depth article will give you all the information that is necessary.

Where is Bodrum on the map of Turkey?

Bodrum is located in the Aegean Region, south-west of Turkey. Between Aydın and Antalya lies Muğla, which is where Bodrum is. This geographical placement brings visitors the chance to spend time where the Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea meets.

Transportation options to get to Bodrum

No matter where you are or which transportation option you want to use, there are many ways of arriving at Bodrum. In this part of the article, we will detail how to make use of every way of transportation for this purpose.

Traveling by plane

There are direct flights available to Milas-Bodrum Airport from most cities in Turkey. This airport is about 36kilometers away from Bodrum’s city center in Milas, Muğla. Flying domestically to Bodrum takes around 1-2 hours. These domestic flights whether direct or with stops usually cost around 500-800 Turkish liras (about 55-90 Euros) in the off-season. They cost about 800-1000 Turkish liras(around 90-110 Euros) in the summer season.

If you are planning to visit Bodrum from abroad there are once again many options for flights. While there mostly are not any direct flights in the off-season, plenty of flights just have one stop for only about an hour or two layovers in Istanbul. On the other hand, in the summer months, there are numerous international flights to Bodrum-Milas Airport.

Visitors can even arrange their flights’ hours to spend some time in Istanbul as well, before flying to Bodrum.

International flight costs to Bodrum vary from 1500 to 9000 (150-1000 Euros) Turkish liras depending on where they depart from and the number of stops they have. Flights from Europe are relatively cheap when compared to other countries. They come to be around 1500-2500 Turkish liras (165-275 Euros) once again depending on the European country.

Flights from the United States, Australia, and China/Japan cost the most while England and Germany offer some of the cheapest options for flying to Turkey.

Traveling by bus

General traveling by bus in Turkey is quite convenient. There are available busses from mostly every city to every other city. While also being a cheaper option, these bus trips provide people a chance to see different parts of the country as they make their way to Bodrum. Taking a bus usually costs around 100-400 Turkish liras (10-40 Euros) depending on the location.

For example, we can examine a bus trip from Eskişehir to Bodrum: if a high comfort option is chosen it will cost about 100-150 Turkish liras (12-18 euros). If more of a budget option is picked it will cost about 50-100 Turkish liras (6-12 Euros). The trip will take around 7 or 8 hours.

Traveling by car

Driving to Bodrum is also an option for visitors wanting to have access to their car while they are in the city.

Using a personal vehicle to drive to Bodrum from any city in Turkey should not be problematic since there are plenty of highways and routes to make use of. There are many chances to take a break at a rest stop along the way.

It is very likely to come across some tolls while driving, these can be looked at before the trip depending on departure location.

Again, as an example we will look at driving from Istanbul to Bodrum: The fastest route goes through Bursa, Balıkesir, Manisa, Izmir, Aydın, and lastly arriving at Muğla. This (700kilometers in total) takes about 7 to 8 hours depending on traffic.

Traveling by ferry

There are ferries that operate between a few Greek Islands and Bodrum. These islands are Kos, Kalimnos, Patmos, Leros, Simi, Rhodes. One way ticket prices are between 17-45 Euros.

There is also a ferry line straight to Bodrum is from Datça (Muğla) to the marina. It’s 33kilometers, lasting around 1-2 hours, and costing 130-160 Turkish liras (15-18 Euros).

Traveling by train

There is no direct railway route that passes near Bodrum. The closest train station is in Söke district of Aydın province. If you would like to get to Bodrum by train, this is your only option. After you get to Söke, you have to take a bus trip to Bodrum. However, this is not a recommended way of travel since trains are slow and their frequency is low.

Recommended transportation options to Bodrum from different places

The fastest option is using planes. Whether a domestic flight from Turkey or an international one from abroad, the time efficiency compared to ticket prices is worth taking it.

Recommended options for travelers with a budget

The visitors who are already in Turkey looking for the best budget option to Bodrum from their city, using a bus is the cheapest option. Most of the time taking only one bus should be enough.

For visitors coming from abroad, this varies a lot from country to country. For most European countries using a plane still offers the cheapest option.

If you are interested in making the most out of your trip, by getting to see other attractions Turkey offers during your trip to Bodrum; in our next section, we will be investigating museums and other historical/natural beauties on the way.

For bus options, the cheapest one is about 130 Turkish liras (15 Euros) and more comfy rides cost around 160 (18 Euros). While the trip takes close to 11 hours there are buses available almost every half hour. The bus terminal in Bodrum is in the city center, very close to the beach.

  • As you approach “Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge” Istanbul Sapphire Observation Deck can be visited along the way from the airport.
  • Before passing the bridge, “Rumeli Hisarı” (an ancient fortress with a panoramic view) can be visited.
  • After passing the bridge if you take a small detour south; “Anatolian Fortress” (Anadoluhisarı) can be visited.
  • After leaving Istanbul, taking the “Osmangazi Bridge” from Kocaeli to Yalova is a good shortcut. Before passing the bridge, “Hannibal’s Tomb” can be visited near Gebze, Kocaeli. This detour only adds about  10 kilometers more to a 750 kilometers trip.
  • Next, along your route in Balıkesir, “Çaylak Şelalesi” (a natural waterfall) can be visited by taking a 20kilometer detour.
  • Ephesus and the other historical heritages near Selçuk are the following attractions on this trip. After passing Izmir we recommend visiting this place if you’re not short on time.
  • Lastly, there is “Euromos Ruins” as you enter Milas, Muğla. Right along the highway to Bodrum, this place is probably the easiest to visit the location during your trip.

Traveling from Izmir

Direct flights from Izmir to Bodrum are usually only available in the summer season. Costing around 200 -300 Turkish liras (22-33 Euros) and taking 40 minutes.

Other flight options with layovers usually have a stop either in Ankara or Istanbul. Making this short trip last close to 8 hours. These plane rides are not recommended for visitors from Izmir.

The bus prices are very affordable since the locations are close to each other. The cheapest option is around 40 Turkish liras (5 Euros) while comfier options are around 60 Turkish liras (7-8 Euros). Bus trips take about 3 hours and 30 minutes depending on traffic.

There is also a train available from Basmane (Izmir) to Söke (Aydın) several times a day. Costing around 15 Turkish liras (1-2 Euros) and taking 2 hours and 30 minutes. The remaining trip can be completed by taking a bus from Söke to Bodrum (which costs 30-40 Turkish liras).

If travelers would like to drive to Bodrum from Izmir, the trip would take close to 3 hours (240 kilometers).

Additionally to the attractions list we gave for trips from Istanbul, “Goat Castle” (Torbalı Izmir) can be visited along the route.

Traveling from Selcuk (Ephesus)

Without any access to a car, visitors can go to Bodrum by bus from Selçuk (Izmir). However, you would need to transfer to another bus in Söke (Aydın). This trip totals 4 hours and 60-70 Turkish liras (7-8 Euros).

If you have access to a car, the drive is only around 170 kilometers lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Travelling from Denizli (Pamukkale)

There are plenty of options for a trip with a bus. The trip takes about 4 hours. While being very cheap (50 Turkish liras), there is a bus leaving from Denizli to Bodrum every hour. However, you would need to take a cab from Pamukkale to Denizli which would cost around 120 – 150 Turkish liras (15-17 Euros). Alternatively, you get to Denizli city center from Pamukkale by public buses of Pamukkale municipality at a very cheap price.

If visitors choose to drive from Pamukkale to Bodrum (250 kilometers), it will take close to 4 hours. Bodrum Dolphin Park is on the route towards the city (Muğla-Bodrum road).

Travelling from Cappadocia

It is possible to go to Kayseri (the closest airport) and take a plane from there to Bodrum with a layover in Istanbul. However, there are better options.

Traveling to “Kayseri City Bus Terminal” will give you several bus options. Ticket prices from Kayseri to Bodrum vary from 100 to 150 Turkish liras (12-17 Euros). The bus trip takes around 15 hours.

Driving from Cappadocia to Bodrum (950 kilometers) takes close to 11 hours. Once again, we will be providing you with some attractions to see along the way.

  • “Aksaray Museum” is the first attraction on the route. There are 15000 historical items in the museum, including 12 mummies from the Byzantine era. The route goes through Aksaray anyway so visiting this attraction will not cause a detour.
  • “Sultanhanı Caravanserai” is the next attraction on the route. It’s a 13th-century Seljuk caravanserai in Aksaray. Once again stopping here will not cause a detour.
  • “Honaz National Park” in Denizli, is a good spot for campers who are traveling to Bodrum. Wildlife viewing and hiking are possible to do here. However, visiting this place will cause a detour.

Traveling from Antalya

Flying from Antalya to Bodrum is possible with a layover in Istanbul. This, while taking too long for a plane trip, is not cost-efficient.

There are several buses available every day. Ticket prices range from 60 to 90 Turkish liras. The trip takes around 7 hours.

Driving will take about 6 hours. “Gulluk Mountain, Termessos National Park” can be visited along the driving route without a big detour.

This national park contains the remains of the ancient city of Termessos.

Getting around in Bodrum Area

Bodrum has a solid public transportation system for tourist use. Minibusses are available every 15 minutes for pretty much any town in Bodrum. Ticket prices are about 3 to 10 Turkish liras (1 Euro or less). We recommend using them instead of taxis because of the expensive cab fare in Bodrum.
